Projects - Care Home
Care Home

In February 2004 we were alerted to a care home where two nuns were looking after children suffering from the HIV virus. We discovered ten children aged from one month to ten years living in a very run down building and found to our horror that they had very little money for food and were unable to provide medicines, medical supplies or a decent habitat where these children could live out their short lives in basic decency. An HIV sufferer in the U.K. given the proper treatment can enjoy a life expectancy of 20 – 40 years but for these children it is between 3 and 9 years.

We have made this our major project and are working towards providing a purpose built hospice within five years and in the meantime ensure that these children are given everything possible to allow them to live and die with dignity.
This is made harder due to the fact that there is a lot of ignorance in India of HIV and sufferers are treated worse than lepers. To adequately describe the desperate conditions and the life these children lead is virtually impossible. They need protein rich nourishing food and special medicines as well as love and understanding none of which is available without cost.
Our volunteers work alongside the two nuns, one of who is undergoing specialist training, and do the best they can with the limited resources available.
In early 2005 the number of children increased to thirteen and we were finding accommodating this number very difficult. However in June 2005 we were offered, and accepted, the use of an empty convent where not only is there more room but there is a garden for the children to play in. It is understood that we can stay here for three years by which time we hope to be in a position to commence building new premises.
