Projects - Childrens Disability Day Care Centre
Dr Reena & Dr Ashika

Novi Survat House – A Day Care Centre for Physically Handicapped Children.

Novi Survat House was opened on 19th December 2007. The Day Care centre is the first of its kind in Goa offering free treatment to poor families, incorporating holistic treatments i.e. Physiotherapy, mental and nutritional needs.

The children are referred to us by the senior Paediatrician at the Goa Medical Hospital and their ages range from 18 months to 10 years. In the main they are children with Cerebral Palsy and will all be suffering medium to severe disabilities, there are little or no facilities for them elsewhere in Goa. The treatment is only offered to those whose parents cannot afford to pay. We do not take children whose parents are able to afford treatment that is available from other organisations.

The Centre is situated in a quiet area of Porvorim and consists of two treatment rooms, an office, kitchen and wet room. Outside is a covered veranda and an area of garden and separating the premises from the road is a wall, making it private.

We are employing two qualified Paediatric Physiotherapists, between them they will be able to offer treatment for up to thirty-six children, each to have one to one care for one hour per week, it is expected that their parents will attend so that they can be taught how to continue the treatment at home. In addition the Doctors will seek to look after the child’s mental and dietary needs, as this is very important if the physical treatment is to be successful. We also employ one of the mothers whose youngest son is very disabled, she attends each day to act as cleaner / cook.

The house has had to be completely refurbished including being decorated, the inside pale blue and white the same as our corporate colours and the outside white.
The electrics were all checked and new power points installed where necessary.
An Aquaguard has been installed to ensure good drinking water.
A geyser has been installed to supply hot water.
The office has been equipped and a refrigerator installed.
It is planned to include ‘refreshments’ for the children to ensure they have a good diet.
Specialist Physiotherapy equipment has been purchased and installed.

Thanks to the generosity of well wishers in the UK we have taken out wheelchairs, a childs and an adults which are proving very necessary.

Our volunteers visit the centre regularly and are able to give assistance to the Doctors if required. Visitors are welcome but must be accompanied by a volunteer.
